Arithmetic book, 1812-1822.

This manuscript textbook was written in 1812 by Merrill Davis. It contains almost entirely arithmetic rules, examples of the rules and problems to illustrate the use of the rules. Though most of the pages are numbered, there is no index. There are also two essays on the subjects of "Contentment" and "Ignorance." There are two pages of notes regarding school teaching. These notes, written 1815-1822, record where school was taught, what dates it was in session, how many students attended and the teacher's pay. There is also one page of anecdotes. Included in this volume is one loose manuscript fragment, 1804-1805, providing a statement of account of Captain Nathan Harrington in Holden, Mass.
